Joseph Stalin's Biography
Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashili (Joseph Stalin's birth name) was born to Besanon Jughashvili, a cobbler, and Ketevan Geladze, a washer women in 1878. Joseph Stalin had a very rough childhood. He was treated poorly by many of the other village children which left him feeling inferior. He was also very susceptible to smallpox and at age seven he caught his small pox for the first time.
While growing up, Joseph's mother wanted him to become a priest so he went to a church school in Gori. He left his schooling to become general secretary of the communist party and and was a part of the red army that defeated Nazi Germany in WW1. He did not return home, instead he stayed in Tifis to devote time into the revolutionary movement. In 1901, he started working full time for the Social Democratic Labor Party.
In 1902, Stalin was arrested for coordinating a labor strike. He was then exiled to Serbia. This would not be the only time we was arrested and exiled during the Russian Revolution though. During this time, Joseph changed his name to 'Stalin' because it meant steel in Russian. Stalin excelled in operation concerning the revolution. Stalin also went into hiding and it was here where he continued to plan and raise money, by robbery, to take control of the government.
In 1917 the revolution began and the tsar abdicated the throne and was then under house arrest. Vladamir Lenin was denounced from government in April 1917. Following Lenin's death, Stalin became the Soviet Dictator. The revolution was complete in October of 1922 and the Bolsheviks took control.
Stalin's Objective: Stalin hoped to rule the Soviet Union for more than two decades. He also hoped to establish a region of fear or terror while modernizing Russia and helping to defeat Nazism.
